NextCloud Tutorial

NextCloud is an Free Software file sharing platform. It allows us to share files within our team through a web interface as well as directly though a synchronized folder in our computer.

1) Go to https://files.revlog.unige.ch

2) Click on “Log in with RevlogID”

3) Enter your RevLogID username and password. Click the “Remember Me” checkbox so that you won't be asked for the password again.

If you don't know your RevlogID account details please contact IT support on Zulip

4) Done!

In the web interface, you'll se the RevLog folder. Everything that you put there will be available for all the team to access.

You can just drag and drop a file or a directory from your computer into the webpage, and it will be uploaded.

Alternatively, you can click on + New and then Upload Files or Upload Folders and select the file or folder that you want to upload

The RevLog/PUBIC folder is publicly accessible to anyone on the internet on the following url: https://files.revlog.unige.ch/s/ZfriLsTcSzYPynX

All other files on the RevLog folder are accessible to people with a RevLog account only. However, they can still be shared with people outside the team via a Share Link.

Share Links are also useful to point a colleague to a specific file you are working on.

Creating Share links

1) Click the sharing icon on the file or folder you want to share.

2) If you want to share with RevLog members only, go to Internal Shares and click the Internal Link icon (arrow 'A' in the figure above). A link to the file is now in your clipboard and you can paste it.

3) If you want to share it with anyone regardless of whether or not they have an account, go to External shares and click on Create public link (arrow 'B' in the figure above).

Note that public links are read-only by default. If you'd like the external user to be able to also modify the file, click in “view only” just below “Share link” and then choose “Can Edit”.

4) In either case, you can send the link to the person with whom you wish to share the file, and they should be able to access it.

Old Versions of a file are kept. To see them, click on the thee dot icon next to a file name, then Detail, then Versions

Instead of using the web interface, you can also download a client application to synchronise a local folder in your computer with the cloud storage.

1) Go to https://nextcloud.com/install/

2) Select your operating system, and download and install the client

3) Launch the client and click on “Log In”

4) You'll be prompted for a “Server address”, copy and paste this address: http://files.revlog.unige.ch

5) You'll be redirected to a browser to log in with RevlogID. You can log in the same way as you would for the web interface

6) If your browser does not open automatically, or if the log in process doesn't work, you can click on the “copy link” button (see screenshot below), and then paste the URL in your web browser. That should allow you to log in with RevlogID and finish the setup.

7) Done!

Then, you can navigate to the folder NextCloud inside your home folder, and you should be able to see the RevLog files. You can use this folder as any other regular folder on your computer, and it should automatically synchronise with our cloud storage
