ChysoCollate
“ChrysoCollate is a freeware for collating and editing texts in any language (Unicode). It allows one to easily collate manuscripts, order them, compare them, and visualise textual traditions, and provides with tools for easy editing, as the making of automatic apparatus.”

Quick Guide
Installation
- Download folder
- Open ChrysoCollate.html
Create or load project
- Create a new project or load a project
- Always remember to SAVE (if you refresh the page, you'll lose the data) !!!
- Button “Options” : change different options, e.g. apparatus' layout, script- and language-based features (sensibility for punctuation, format, brackets, case sensitive, spaces), expressions
- Button “Help”: complete documentation
Then, the program has 2 modes: Collation and Edition (Switch in the right-top corner)
Collation Mode
- Button “Add wit.”
- Add text of witness (not too long text, in case separate per chapter or section)
- Alternative: First-witness mode and type the text (each space makes a new variant locus)
- To use the Viewer, the foliotation is needed
- Button “+F”: Add nr. of folio (to be putted on the first word of the folio), e.g. 5va and add path to image or PDF (indicating also the page number)
- Add second witness with Add. wit.: this time the text is not needed, since the software doesn't do an automatic alignment as in CollateX (only semi-automatic) ⇒ assess the most similar ms
- Then just push Tab to get all the words and if there is a variant, you can change the cell
- Also if you right-click on a cell, it will copy it
- Wit. Settings: modify witnesses order and change similarity of each witness
- Button “Viewer”: to display images
- Icon “Scissors”: split variant (after space)
- Icon “Left arrow”: merge variant with the previous one
- Icon “+”: add variant locus
- Icon “-”: remove variant locus
- Icon “Where are you in your witnesses?” (open book with sign)
- Icon “Navigate the text easily”: open the text, click on word and will take to the variant locus
- Colors: black = already edited, grey = lectio not yet edited
- 2 types of notes:
- editorial comments with button “+C” (in the apparatus)
- personal comments with button “+N” (not in the apparatus)
- Editorial comment
- Button +C, select cell, add note (use italics in case)
- Icon “Blue Document”: list of all the comments, that is possible to modify or delete
- Personal comment
- Button +N, select cell add comment
- Icon “Orange Document”: all the personal comments
- Lacuna: empty cells ⇒ add omisit and ms siglum for each word
- Use Button +L/A: add {lacuna} or {absentia}, chose beginning and end of the lacuna
- Lacuna or absent reading (voluntary) are 2 different levels of absence of the text
- Button VG: variants graph (re-click to come back to table view)
- Button “Add text”: to add text to a witness
- Button “Import”: import options, mss+options, stemma from other ChrysoCollate file or CollateX collation
- Button “Export wit.”: one or all witnesses (export the text)
- Button “Delete v.l.”: delete a variant location
- Button “Merge v.l.”: at the end of the collation, you can use it to merge all the identical sequences. Attention: always make a BACKUP first! Not ctrl+Z function, no coming back!
- Button “Transl.”: translation that you can synchronize with the text with buttons S and use button +S to add a new point of synchronization to a variant place
- Button “Save”: it is a versioning system ⇒ new file with name of the project + date + time
Edition Mode
- At the beginning there is no apparatus yet
- Mouse over Edition (on the left) ⇒ text (grey text = not yet edited)
- Button Apparatus: create new apparatus
- Do not change default apparatus
- App. crit. e crit. settings
- click on cell to choose the edited text, click on lectio to select as lemma
- Editor's p. (proposals) : add lemma + note (e.g. correxi) and/or choose to omit a wit.
- To omit a wit is not ideal ⇒ better to use “accolades”, eg. [primum] which goes in the edited text. Attention: then it is not anymore updated (therefore, in red)
- crit. settings: indicate similarity, also to not show the apparatus if needed or to remove a ms from apparatus for a locus
- Dismiss wit.: remove ms from all the apparatus
- Button “Pre-edit”: attention, danger! Very specific case, to avoid and only in pre-edition, to be re-checked!
- 3 options: invariant places, use a witness, complex auto-edit (base witness, except when all the other wit. have the same reading against the base wit.)
- Button “Stemma”: to build the stemma ⇒ to be verified!
- In the variant place, there is the Icon of the graph to see the stemma for that place
- You can add a conjectured wit.
- Button “Analytical tools”: some basic statistics on the textual tradition
- Button “Export”: different formats (odt, cte, reledmac, ekdosis, xml/tei)
